['liːvɪs], F. (Frank) R. (Raymond), englischer Literaturkritiker, * Cambridge 14. 7. 1895, ✝ ebenda 17. 4. 1978; war 1936-62 Fellow des Downing College in Cambridge. Leavis betonte die moralische Funktion der Literatur und war ein einflussreicher Kritiker; 1932-53 gab er zusammen mit seiner Frau Queenie Dorothy (* 1906, ✝ 1981) die Zeitschrift »Scrutiny« heraus. Er vertrat mit seiner oft polemischen Kulturkritik den Gedanken einer sich besonders an der Literatur schulenden Elite als Gegengewicht zur Massenkultur.
